Vision
Hydrogen is increasingly recognised as playing a key role in achieving climate neutrality. When produced from renewable energy sources, it offers a promising solution for decarbonising the transport sector. However, the widespread adoption of hydrogen mobility hinges on making hydrogen both accessible and affordable. This necessitates overcoming challenges related to its distribution and logistics.
HYGHER aims to demonstrate the feasibility of an innovative, cost-efficient, and reliable high-pressure hydrogen value chain. This entails pioneering solutions for hydrogen compression and high-pressure gaseous hydrogen distribution, with the ultimate goal of reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to clean energy sources.
HYGHER Approach
- Advanced Hydrogen Compressor utilising metal hydrides for efficient, reliable, and scalable hydrogen compression to meet varying demands.
- High-Capacity Tube Trailers for safe and effective high-pressure hydrogen transport.
- Comprehensive Value Chain Integration for maximising efficiency through cohesive end-to-end implementation, from hydrogen production to public refuelling stations.
HYGHER will showcase the readiness of this value chain for large-scale deployment, providing a sustainable and safe solution through:
- Environmentally friendly Design: Embedding environmental considerations and circularity approaches in the early design stages for eco-friendly technologies and practices.
- Rigorous Safety Standards: Adhering to stringent safety requirements and practices at all stages of the value chain.

Expected outcomes & impacts
The solutions developed by HYGHER will accelerate the adoption of diverse hydrogen solutions, including hydrogen mobility and is thereby contributing to the EU’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. More specifically, by optimising the combination of innovative components along the distribution value chain, HYGHER will significantly reduce the cost of hydrogen at refuelling stations for end users.
Key outputs of the project will include safety recommendations and guidance for efficiently deploying the new distribution value chain across the EU. The collaborative work within HYGHER will foster the growth of the involved industry and mobility partners, enhancing the EU’s competitiveness and industrial leadership in hydrogen technologies.
